Mission Statement

To provide accurate, reliable, and timely information to consumers in Antigua and Barbuda while enforcing an effective consumer protection policy with diligence and enthusiasm.

Functions of the Division

The Division serves to:

  • Regulate the supply and prices of essential goods to ensure they are accessible and fairly priced.
  • Protect consumers from unfair trading practices and ensure that goods and services meet acceptable standards.
  • Safeguard consumer interests in areas related to economics, health, safety, and general welfare.

Organizational Structure

This section ensures the enforcement of the Distribution and Price of Goods Act (CAP. 138). Staffed with a Senior Price Control Officer, one Price Control Officer, one Senior Price Control Inspector, and ten Price Control Inspectors, the team monitors compliance with pricing regulations on essential goods.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensuring that basic goods are marked with selling prices.
  • Regulating wholesale and retail prices within the set maximum profit margins (typically 10% for wholesale and 15% for retail).
  • Conducting regular inspections and prosecuting those who violate price regulations.

Consumer Affairs Section

As the link between consumers and the business sector, this section addresses consumer complaints and ensures fair trading practices. It is staffed by a Consumer Affairs Officer and four Liaison Officers.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Investigating consumer complaints and queries.
  • Educating the public on consumer rights and product safety.
  • Promoting fair trade, accurate pricing, and responsible advertising.
  • Conducting public education campaigns via media and outreach programs.

Information Section

This section supports the Division’s public outreach by producing informational materials on consumer rights, including brochures, posters, and other educational content. It also coordinates public engagements such as:
  • Radio and television programs
  • School and community lectures
  • Seminars and exhibitions
  • Research initiatives

This comprehensive structure and the division of roles enable the Division of Prices and Consumer Affairs to protect and promote consumer welfare across Antigua and Barbuda effectively.
